Five notes — 1, b3, 4, 5, b7 — and no wrong ones. The minor pentatonic is the most-played scale on the guitar: it drives blues, rock, funk and pop solos because every note in it sits comfortably over a minor chord, so you can focus on phrasing instead of note-picking. In A, the notes are A, C, D, E, G.
Why this is the first scale to learn
The minor pentatonic is the natural minor scale with the two "risky" notes removed — the 2nd and the b6, the ones that clash hardest if you land on them at the wrong moment. What's left is five safe notes, which is why beginners sound good with it on day one. It's also why it never gets outgrown: B.B. King, Hendrix, Gilmour and virtually every rock player since built careers mostly inside these five notes.
The five positions
The same five notes repeat across the whole neck in five overlapping box shapes. Position 1 (root on the 6th string) is where everyone starts — in A minor, that's frets 5–8. Learn it first, spend real time with it, then connect to the neighbouring boxes. The shapes below are in A minor; slide any of them up or down to change key — the pattern never changes.

When to use it
- Over a minor key or minor blues — its home. A minor pentatonic over an Am jam simply works.
- Over a major blues — the classic "blues rub": the b3 against the band's major 3rd is the sound of the blues. Mix in the major pentatonic to resolve it.
- Add the b5 and it becomes the blues scale — same shapes, one extra chromatic sting.
